What Size Winch Do I Need?

The industry rule is your vehicle's GVM multiplied by 1.5. Find the GVM on the compliance plate in your driver's door jamb, multiply by 1.5, then multiply by 2.205 to convert to pounds. For most Australian dual-cab utes that lands around 11,000lb, which means a 12,000lb winch rather than the 9,500lb that often gets fitted. Synthetic Rope Or Steel Cable?

Synthetic rope is lighter, easier to handle, and stores far less energy if it fails — which is why most recreational 4WDers now choose it. Steel is tougher against abrasion and heat, and costs less. Neither makes winching safe on its own: both need a damper and bystanders well clear, and both should be inspected before every use.
