Protect Your Tent Floor From Stove Sparks and Embers With a Proper Fireproof Mat

You have spent good money on a quality canvas tent and a Winnerwell stove — the last thing you want is a stray ember burning a hole through your groundsheet on the first night out. It happens more often than people think, and it only takes one spark landing in the wrong spot while you are loading the firebox or clearing ash.

The Winnerwell Fireproof Mat sits underneath your tent stove and catches anything that escapes — sparks, embers, ash fallout. Made from fiberglass with a heat-resistant silicone coating, it handles temperatures up to 250°C without breaking down. At 98 x 80cm it covers the full footprint under any Winnerwell Nomad or Woodlander stove with room to spare on all sides.

Use It Under the Stove or Behind It on the Wall

Most people lay the mat flat under their stove, but it does double duty. Riveted grommets at the corners mean you can hang it on the tent wall behind the stove to protect the canvas from radiant heat. If your stove sits close to a sidewall — common in smaller bell tents and tipi shelters — this is a smart move that protects your tent investment for the cost of a tank of fuel.

Lightweight Enough to Actually Bring With You

At just 0.48kg, this mat adds almost nothing to your pack weight. It rolls or folds flat and slides into your stove carry bag alongside the chimney sections. There is no excuse to leave it behind, and every reason to bring it — replacing a burnt groundsheet costs ten times more than the mat itself.

What You Need to Know About Heat Transfer

The mat prevents direct contact between sparks or embers and your tent floor. However, it is a thin fireproof barrier, not a full insulation pad. During long burn sessions, heat can still transfer through the bottom of the firebox to the ground beneath the mat. Keep the stove elevated on its legs (all Winnerwell stoves include legs or a stand) and deal with any stray embers promptly rather than letting them sit and smoulder on the mat surface.
